Another Hero Passes
Today I found out that one of my Hero's, Slim Carter, passed last night. Slim was in my MOPH chapter. He was one of the finest men I ever knew. He flew PBY's in WWII and lost his leg to flak over Rabul. Cut it clean off. Slim drove around Beaufort, until Macular Degeneration took his sight, in a great older Jeep with a horn that blew "Dixie". When we tried to participate in the annual Memorial Day Parade, we, the MOPH were told we had to be on the back end of the parade. Slim would have none of that and waved his leg at the organizers explaining to them in the most candid way that he lost a leg fighting for this country and would not be delogated to the rear. We ended up passing on being in the thing and left. There is more to the story....ask me on the mountain.
Here's to a fine Southern Gentleman and true American Hero. Rest in Peace Slim!
