Would be neat if the Kid from Bakersfield won another race Sunday that would be one hex of a winning streak

JD
Don't know who is from Bakersfield?
But the 17 is going to win. The Red sox owner got a rude awakening into nascar last week, They thing that was bad , wait till they get to Talladega.
I watched a interview with a driver a few years ago and he said. " I was right behind the guy that won the race and I finished 5th. " (Cause they finish three wide)
Cal, is a better track than Daytona, I wish they would take the banking off Daytona and get rid of the restrictor plate. But then, I remember 200 mph pit lane speeds also. And no radio communications. Now that was exciting.

Kevin Harvick is the Kid from Bakersfield and I agree them days of no radios and no speedlimits were fun. I still remember drivers going over the wall and into the trees at some of the races :-) now the only place you see them head for the trees is small town dirt tracks Matt's a good Racer and should be a contender this Sun.

Here is something neat from the Late Smokey Yunicks widow:

Speed Mail of the Week
This week's edition we might be the best mail ever as it came to us in response to naming the late great Smokey Yunick as the greatest cheater in NASCAR history:

As Smokey's widow I can tell you that wherever he is he is grinning from ear to ear, because everything ? and I mean everything ? they are "inventing"now to go faster he did already and it all is just now being rediscovered. He even patented some of his ideas.

NASCAR in it's effort to recruit big money sponsors was and probably still is very quick to look the other way when it suited them and their personal rulebook is very short when someone not in their favor looks like they might be in a position to win.

This is why Smokey left NASCAR. It was their loss and I hope more good men don't give up in disgust, too.

Thank you for the trip down memory lane...it was sweet to have some of his escapades revisited.

? Margie Yunick

Smokey Yunick ,
The thing I remember about him was that stupid hat he wore all the time., Looked kinda like a kids cowboy hat that you'd get from Scots 5 and dime.
I think his name was Henry and he had the number 3 before Dale. When Pontiac got into racing, Smokey and Fire ball Roberts had a car together, I don't remember the number.

Hears another little bit of history about Smokey.
In 69 when the BOSS 302 came out, (Thats a Pontiac story in it's self) Smokey made a 69 mustang and took it to the Trans am circut, and proceeded to wax those orange Boss 302. I seen a picture of that somewhere, I'll try to find it.

His name was Henry. In 1959, he and Edward Glenn "Fireball" Roberts got together. It lasted three years. The car was #22. The pic is Smokey Yunick.

"Fireball" Roberts. He got the nickname from his baseball pitch. At 6'2" he was a tall race driver.
