Corporal Arnold Miller
Corporal Arnold Miller drifted away on this day, Monday, January 5, 2007. He was in WWII in the South Pacific for 3 1/2 years and was in three major invasions and two minor ones. He was in the Americal Division Field Artillery and was attached to the First Marine Division. He was on Guadalcanal from the first and was decorated for taking ammunition under fire to Bloody Ridge. He was involved in the defense of Henderson Field and the Cactus Air Force. He was later in the Battle of Bouganiville Island and fought during multiple earthquakes and a volcanic eruption. He had many a close call including having his tent struck by lightning. Everyone but him was killed. He was in the liberation of the Phillipines with his General and friend, Douglas MacArthur. As he was going home on a troop ship, it struck a mine. He was under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransico. Fortunately it was a dud.

Rounds out for the ol' soldier Doc. Deb and I will say a prayer for Shirley's wonderful father. It was such a pleasure meeting him and having supper with him. My dad, also a "Canal" vet, and all the other men of the Canal are getting him checked in. He is in great hands. He was also a big fan of UNC. Hopefully they will get the NCAA for him this year!

Doc :
With deepest sympathy, my prayers for you and your family. My dad fought along side him in the 43rd Inf. Div. I went to my Uncle Frank's ( my mother's brother ) funeral Sunday. He was 86...He was in in North Africa, Sicily, and liberated Rome. He was an ambulance driver. When they played taps at the graveside, it was moving and sad at the same time. God Bless the WWII vets !! May God Bless, Larry

Arnold was known for his sense of humor. Tom and Andy came to visit us a few years ago and we all went out to eat including Arnold. Tonm and Andy got into the joking about the North and South. This went on quite a while when Arnold asked which one of them was the Yankee.
About a week before he died he had been comatose for a couple of days and my son David went to visit him in the nursing home. Arnold was out of it so David sat down and held Arnold's hand for about an hour until Arnold's son Jim came into the room. Arnold looks up at Jim and hands him David's hand and said "Jim, I'm tired. Would you hold this for a while?"
