Default Operation Wheeler

We were actually under the operational control of the 101st. Around the middle of OCT or so of 67, as I recall around Kontum.
My unit was in particular working with some Cav guys from the 1/9. I remember they being called a Blue team, whatever that was (blue leader to blue2) I can still hear that.. We were off some distance from the Cav guys and they became under fire. our A-company went to there aid. I'll have to get my letters out and review, but this is where we lost our BN S1. I think he was shot down twice.
I'll check.
I guees I need to look up (Google)Operation wheeler and see what they say.

Default Blue Team

Our air cav Troop had a blue team . They were a squad of grunts that the air cav troop would insert on the ground to check things out. Pretty bad job cause they usually didn't insert them unless they saw something

Lt.
There was plenty to see around Kontum in Oct 67. I can't remember talking to any of them on the Radio, But I can recall that radio transmission. Blue leader-etc. I never knew what a Blue team was. we worked with some LRRPs from the 101 but they always had some funky call signs like Gator 35 or something like that. Im not real sure just what there call signs meant either. I liked talking to Companies, Alpha 1-1 was easy , those special guys were confusing and , I thought, Not necessary. As I recall the LRRPs from the 101 went more north and west and the Blue whatever from the Cav went more south and southwest from the Kontum CA site. 1st time I ever CA-d with a chinook.

Ron, are you sure it was Wheeler? Are you sure it was around Kontum? The reason I ask is because I got a letter in OCT67 from a buddy that was still in Nam with the 101st. I was at Bragg with the 82nd. He told me about 5 guys that I knew being killed in SEP. Two on one day, and three on another about a week apart. This was during Operation Wheeler, but I'm about positive that they were around Chu Lai. Of course, I'm old and could be wrong .

I was around Kontum from early DEC66 - late JAN67. A scary place. Hated it.

Tom
Tell you the truth, I wasn't sure so I went digging. seem there were several units involved with operation Wheeler, each had its own history, 198, 1/14, several cav units, 2 artilary units, 1/35, 101, and so on. So Im still not sure. Hear is a site that showed us in opration wheeler. This artical kinda explains some things for me anyway. We were in Operation wheeler and also in Operation Wallowa with the Cav.
I always knew I was Good but seems I was in two places at once.
Oh well, Cav/101 not a lot of difference to me anyway.
