Cheney's claim of not meeting Edwards backfires on vice president

BY THOMAS FITZGERALD

Knight Ridder Newspapers

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - (KRT) - At first, it seemed like it might go down in history as one of those killer debate moments: Vice President Dick Cheney, who presides over the Senate, said he'd never met Sen. John Edwards until their encounter Tuesday night in Cleveland.

"I'm up in the Senate most Tuesdays when they're in session," said Cheney, turning to Edwards, the North Carolina Democrat, whom he faulted for skipping lots of votes. "The first time I ever met you was when you walked on the stage tonight."

Whoops!

But his accusation backfired. Cheney was wrong.

Within an hour, Democrats circulated photographs and video snippets showing Edwards and Cheney standing next to each other on the dais at the Feb. 1, 2001, National Prayer breakfast.

"Thank you very much. Congressman Watts, Senator Edwards, friends across the country and distinguished visitors to our country from all over the world, Lynne and I are honored to be with you all this morning," Cheney said, according to a transcript.

Edwards also met Cheney at the ceremonial swearing-in of Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., on Jan. 8, 2003, according to newspaper accounts.

It also was a stretch for Cheney to suggest that he frequently presides over the Senate. Cheney wields the gavel only when he's needed to cast tie-breaking votes, which happened only three times in 2003. He does visit Capitol Hill on Tuesdays, for strategy lunches with Republican senators, but no Democrats are invited.

Cheney aides said Wednesday that his comment wasn't misleading. HUH?????

"The vice president has no recollection of meeting Senator Edwards," said Anne Womack, Cheney's campaign spokeswoman. "The important point is during his Senate career, Senator Edwards has failed to establish a record."

During 2003, as he was beginning his run for the Democratic presidential nomination, Edwards missed 38 percent of the 459 roll-call votes.

(Knight Ridder Newspapers correspondents James Kuhnhenn and Matt Stearns contributed to this report.)

So then, let me get this straight.

First Cheney claims he's NEVER met John Edwards until the debate that night. Just another bald-faced lie that folks SHOULD be accustomed to by now.

Then
.

As President Pro-Tem of the Senate, Vice-President Cheney is SUPPOSED to "preside" over ALL Senate "roll call" votes?? To prevent the possibility of a "tie" in voting and break a "deadlock" when ones occurs, right?

And, HE is there THREE times for this "function" out of a possible FOUR HUNDRED FIFTY NINE (459) times, right? He was there for THREE (count'em 3 ..that's THREE for you math challenged folks in Rio Linda Land!)

Which means Cheney missed NINETY NINE and NINE HUNDRED NINETY NINE THOUSANDSTH (99.994%) of all these votes, and he has the unmitigated audacity to accuse John Edwards of "failing to establish a record" of consistent voting or "attendance" (where he missed 38% of the votes?) in the Senate???

OH................NOW I get it........................It's OK for Cheney cause he's a Repugnant.............But, it's NOT ok for Edwards cause he's a Democrat!

How silly of me!

WOW-Edwards must have made quite and impression on Cheney.ha-ha

I know Edwards impresses me-I can't remember the last time I saw him either.

Wait a minute-I do remember seeing him at the NAVL convention giving a speech on 100 ways to destroy our health system, and become rich.

NAVL-National Association of Vampire Lawyer

Check TV guide for Edwards next info-mercial on how you too can turn a hangnail into a billion dollar lawsuit.

I sure hope he doesn't go after plastic surgeons-atl least not until I get my sex change opn.

I'am being two faced-I might need him if my breasts come out cockeyed.

Dammit-I can see the money rolling in now.

Default Well,

I believe I'd trust a trial lawyer that has helped disadvantaged, disabled children and their families get what they rightfully deserve.

Rather than an ex-Halliburton CEO who has promoted tactics and business practices that have screwed the country out of millions of $$$$, and had at best immoral (and at worst illegal) dealings with "terrorist haboring" countrys like Iran, Syria and Lybia during his tenure as CEO!

DAMMIT ALL-DON'T YOU JUST HATE IT WHEN COMPANIES MAKE MONEY.THAT'S WHY I DONATE 1 PAYCHECK A MONTH TO CHARITY.

THE NATIONAL UNWED LEBANESE MOTHERS HOME GETS ONE OF MY PAYCHECK EACH MONTH.

SINCE EDWARDS AND KERRY DON'T UTILIZE THE TAX LOOPHOLES FOR THE WEALTHY,THAT SHOULD LEAVE THEM MORE MONEY TO GIVE TO THE POOR AND DOWNTRODDEN.GOD BLESS EM.
