Default Ten Commandments

Word for today:
"OXYMORON"
Definition: Removing the Ten Commandments from the courthouse, while making people in the courtrooms swear on the Bible to tell the truth, the whole truth, so help you God!

A friend of mine was a witness in a spousal abuse case a few years ago and, when he took the stand, was asked to swear "...so help you God?" He answered that God had no bearing in his being able to tell the truth, which he said he would do. Man, what an uproar he caused! The defense attorney wanted him thrown out, the judge warned him he had to swear according to the dictates of the court, etc., but he refused. Finally, after both attorneys and the judge adjourned to chambers to talk it out, they let him testify without saying any reference to God.

If I'm not senile yet, I think there is a way one can swear an oath in court which is something like, "I do solemnly affirm"...

A Jewish friend of mine says he always prefers that way of speaking since his religion prohibits him from saying the name of God.

Sound right?
