N.C.-based Marine pleads guilty to conspiring to distribute narcotics

OMAHA, Neb. - A Marine Corps sergeant based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., has pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute narcotics after his car was stopped for speeding and 10 pounds of cocaine were found.

Two other related charges were dropped in U.S. District Court on Monday against Steven S. Brown, 25, from Bridgeport, N.Y., as part of a plea agreement, said Donald J. Angelini, Jr., Brown's lawyer.

Brown and a fellow Marine, Sgt. Thomas G. Velasco, 24, of Chicago, were stopped at about 2:30 a.m. CDT March 9 on Interstate 80 in central Omaha. Ten pounds of cocaine were found after the men agreed to a search of the vehicle, police said.

All were based at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Brown served as a radio operator for an anti-terrorism unit of the 3rd Battalion.

Sentencing for Brown was set for Aug. 25.

Velasco's case was pending.
