Swamp drain: Trump rescinds Treasury nom of federal prosecutor accused of letting all
  By Jon Dougherty (TNS) Multiple mainstream news outlets reported Wednesday that President Trump has rescinded the nomination of former U.S. Attorney Jessie Liu to be an undersecretary at the Treasury Department, but there is much more to that story than what they’re saying. The tone of the reporting is typically critical and couched in language implying that Trump is working with Attorney General William Barr on some backdoor arrangement to “politicize” the Justice Department — a sick joke, to be sure, since that’s precisely what Barack Obama did with*his Justice Department.

Liu also supervised the case against Trump associate*Roger Stone. On Tuesday, all four line prosecutors withdrew from the case — and one quit the Justice Department altogether — after*Barr and his top aides intervened*to reverse a stiff sentencing recommendation of up to nine years in prison that the line prosecutors had filed with the court Monday. (Liu left before the sentencing recommendation was made.) CNN is reporting much the same thing, claiming that the decisions by Trump and Barr have to do with Liu’s ‘association’ and ‘ties’ to the McCabe and Stone cases: While head of the US Attorney’s Office in Washington, Liu inherited many of the major ongoing cases from Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation and was also handling the politically charged case of former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, a frequent target of Trump’s ire who is also a CNN contributor. As Trump and administration officials weighed pulling Liu’s nomination to serve as the Treasury Department’s under secretary for terrorism and financial crimes, a central factor in the talks was how she had run the US Attorney’s Office. Trump made the final decision to pull the nomination two days before her scheduled confirmation hearing. And so on. A brief history regarding McCabe’s case. Earlier reporting by the National Review noted that Liu actually recommended that the former FBI deputy director be charged for lying to federal investigators about his actions related to his role in the ‘Spygate’ affair. And speaking of Spygate, this is where it gets interesting regarding Liu. Yes, Trump’s and Barr’s decisions have a lot to do with Liu’s ‘handling of politically sensitive cases,’ just not those involving Stone (the Democrats’ outrage of the moment) and McCabe. As The Conservative Treehouse pointed out in detail on Tuesday, what sank Liu’s nomination goes much deeper: There is evidence suggesting that Liu may have known the Justice Department has evidence that former Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Director James Wolfe (remember him?) leaked the FISA application that was used against Carter Page, once a member of the 2016 Trump campaign. While the FBI clearly zeroed in on Wolfe as a suspect for disclosures of classified information about Page, the fact that he was interacting with the Senate panel was not itself classified and investigators did not establish that Wolfe disclosed classified information to anyone.
