McNamara documentary stirs up old Vietnam War angst

Published February 1, 2004 MOV01 Errol Morris was conducting a Q&A
session after a screening of his Oscar-nominated documentary "The Fog
of War," about former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara and the
Vietnam War, when a screaming match broke out between two viewers.

Morris said he was worried that the confrontation would turn physical,
and that frightened him.

"But didn't it also make you feel good?" he was asked.

Morris pondered the question for a few seconds before revealing a shy,
semi-embarrassed smile. "Yeah, kinda," he confessed.

Morris, who succeeded in reopening a Texas murder case with his 1988
film "The Thin Blue Line," denied that he is trying to rekindle the
political divisiveness of the 1960s. But, at the same time, he said,
