Film helps draw out Vietnam-era radical from Albuquerque obscurity

Mark Rudd was living a respectably quiet life in Albuquerque, teaching
math to students during his 20-year tenure at Albuquerque
Technical-Vocational Institute.

Then documentarian Sam Green called Rudd about participating in a
movie about the Weathermen, the splinter group of Students for a
Democratic Society that planted bombs in the U.S. Capitol and other
federal buildings to protest the Vietnam War in the early 1970s.

The man who says he was keeping silent as a way to forget those years,
when he was the leader of one of the few violent antiwar factions in
the country and a federal fugitive, was suddenly thinking about
talking.

"I tend to be distrustful of the media in the sense that I'm very
skeptical," Rudd says, remembering the day in 2001 when Green
contacted him. "But we had friends in common, and they all urged me to
get with him. I just took a leap of faith."

And then the documentary, "The Weather Underground," had its
Albuquerque premiere Friday at Nob Hill's Guild Theater. And Rudd, 56,
