Vietnam memorial to mark anniversary

It has stood for two decades, a silent reminder of those who died in
Vietnam and a testament to the brotherhood of war.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, veterans, elected officials and members of the
general public will gather at the New Castle County Vietnam Veterans
Memorial at 18th Street and Baynard Boulevard in Wilmington to mark
its 20th anniversary.

They will read the names of those who died and those still listed as
missing in action.

Organizers said they are hoping for a large turnout at the anniversary
ceremony.

The reason: "The better understanding people have of the war and those
who served, the better we'll be as a nation," said Maj. General Frank
Vavala, Adjutant General of the Delaware National Guard.

"We've sent out hundreds of invitations," said Tom Daws of Newark,
president of Chapter 83 of the Vietnam Veterans of America. "Many
people have never seen this memorial and we hope they will take time
to stop by and take a look at it."

Sculpted by Charles Parks, "the memorial depicts a black soldier
carrying the lifeless body of a white soldier in his arms," Daws said.
"It reminds us that we are all brothers, not only in combat but
always."

Around the base of the memorial are the names of 166 Delaware soldiers
who didn't come home from Vietnam.
