Bin Laden's son rises to top al-Qaeda ranks

WASHINGTON (AFP) - One of Osama bin Laden's eldest sons has risen to
the top ranks of al-Qaeda and is helping run the terror network from
Iran, the Washington Post reported.

Saad bin Laden, believed to be 24, and other top al-Qaeda operatives
are operating inside Iran near Afghan border protected by an elite
Iranian unit linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,
according to the Post.

The newspaper cites US, European and Arab officials as its sources.

Saad has been linked to both the May 12 suicide bombing in Riyadh that
killed 35, and the May 16 bombings that killed 45 people in
Casablanca, Morocco, according to the Post.

Osama bin Laden is believed to have more than 24 children with five
wives. Saad is one of his eldest sons with his first wife, Syrian
Najwa Ghanem.

Saad -- who is fluent in English and is computer-literate -- was in
Afghanistan in the mid-1980s when his father Osama first formed
al-Qaeda, the Post reported.

Intelligence officials are split however on how high Saad has risen in
the al-Qaeda leadership, though most agree that his influence has
increased over the past six months.

The al-Qaeda members -- as many as 400, Saudi officials told the Post
-- are restricted to their bases close to the Afghan border. They are
being protected by an Iranian unit known as the Jerusalem Force or the
Qods Force that is controlled by radical Iranian clerics and outside
of the control of President Mohammad Khatami's central government.

The unit's mission is to export the "Islamic revolution" by training,
arming and collaborating with foreign terrorist groups -- even those
that do not share Iran's fundamentalist Shiite brand of Islam,
according to the Post.
