The Sloop-of-war Vincennes becomes the first U.S. warship to circle the globe.
1861: Tennessee votes to secede from the Union and join the Confederacy. 1862: General Richard C. Ewell and 5,000 confederate troops defeat a halfhearted attack at Cross Keys by union troops. 1863: Residents of Vicksburg flee into caves as General Ulysses S. Grants army begins shelling the town. 1904: U.S. Marines land in Tangiers, Morocco, to protect U.S. citizens. 1916: The British occupy Bismarckburg and the Belgians occupy Usumbara. 1917: The Italians occupy Jannina. 1941: British and Free French forces enter Syria and Lebanon in Operation Exporter. 1944: U.S. General Omar Bradley, following orders from General Eisenhower, links up American troops from Omaha Beach with British troops from Gold Beach at Colleville-sur-Mer. 1953: U.N. and communist delegates at the peace talks signed an agreement on the exchange of prisoners.
