Operation Guardian Assistance

To assist in the large humanitarian effort in Africa, Navy P-3C aircraft, which were forward-deployed to the Mediterranean, detached to Entebbe, Uganda. The crew and aircraft provided critical overland surveillance data to the joint task force commander. This information on the mass movement of refugees from Rwanda to Zaire assisted national-level policy-makers in responding to changing needs. The timely distribution and evaluation of this data prevented the unnecessary deployment of a multinational force.
