Default Vietnamese Haircuts

The first time we got a stand-down after after 3 months in the jungles
west of Kontum. We were choppered to Mary Lou, between Pleiku and
Kontum. We got showers were issued clean clothes and given haircuts
by a Vietnamese barber. He asked if I wanted my neck relaxed, I said
sure. He jerked my head left then right. There was a cracking
sensation, and suddenly my head felt like the weight of the world had
been removed. Carrying that ruck had gotten my shoulders that tight.
Next he asked if I wanted my ears clean. He stuck picks in my ears
and pulled out all kinds of crap, most of what I think was backwash
from chopper rotors. It wasn't just like regular wax buildup. I
could hear better. I never felt so much better after a haircut.

The best shaves I've ever had in my life were the ones from the Camp
Tien Sha barbers. The old gent I regularly went to would run a silk
cloth over my face when he finished. If there was the slightest drag
or snag, he resumed "polishing" my face. Not that it made me any
handsomer. Sigh...

Thai barbers routinely did that. The first time I got the treatment,
the guy didn't ask ... he just twisted. I was outta that chair in an
instant, heart pounding, cold sweat. I truly thought he was trying to
kill me. Everyone else in the place got a great laugh. I went straight
to the club from there and downed two Rusty Nails. After 32 years, the
whole thing is funny.

You guys cracked me up! :-)
At least you didn't get the kind of embarrassing treatment as most of
us Viet kids did when we were lil... One time, my barber was done
shaving half of my head, then there was a fight breaking out in the
neighborhood. He stopped and went to check it out, and never came
back that evening! My aunt had to look for me and I had to wear that
half-haircut til the next morning when we saw him again at his "shop".
The f*cker totally forgot that he was at a middle of giving a haircut
on that day! Heheheh!!!

Cheers,
n.t.
