Polish your boots
While in some Base camp somewhere, A friend and were walking along sniffing out a beer and along comes this 2nd Lt.
I didn't even think about saluteing him, He turns around and say HEY , I stop, Yes sir. DONT YOU SALUTE officers in your company? I thought for a second and told him, NO. That didn't really go over well with the new LT. Who is your CO, etc. etc. I told him all the things he asked except one, He said your Boots look like shit, when is the last time you polished them? What? Never I said, That wasn't a good answer either. Later that day my LT comes to me and said , what the hell did you say to a LT today? I told him the story, He laughed, we went and found beer. Did any of you guys (YA'll) ever shine your boots in VN. I never even seen any polish. Once a month we would get new boots, thats it. Ron |

I used to do mine regular. No fancy spit shines, just a clean coat. I promised my mother before I left that I would be on my best behavior, and that was just one of the things I did to pass the long hours that I could have spent drinking or -- whatever.

Never. Came home in my jungle fatigues and got new boots but didn't polish them.
And never saluted an officer , no matter what the rank , in the bush. They were targets enough with the tell-tale RTO right behind them.

What my hommie said. Never polished boots. When I first got to my Squadron I saluted the LTC.reporting in. He told me never to salute him again or anyone else. Never wore rank either and tied down my BN radio antenna on my track. Hate to admit it but also tried to keep someone between me and the RTO when on foot.

Never shined my boots . On our infrequent trips to the rear we were told to polish the boots but we never did. Filled a lot of sand bags though .

Bill/Lt
you didn't have it bad, I had to carry that thing and make sure i was close , but not to close to the LT. You are right in He didn't want to be next to me walking. I always thought is was because I smelled bad.
One time just a joke I drew an arrow pointed left on a piece of paper and wrote LT under it, hung it on my radio and went and stood next to LT while someone took a picture. Was cool when picture came back. The guy gave it to LT. Ron |
