![]() America Awaits The Iraq War Memorial
America’s military operations in Iraq may one day replace Vietnam as America’s most controversial war. The Vietnam War was America’s most controversial war and longest hostile military activity. Korea remains America’s longest war because the Korean War has never officially ended. Although America’s military in Iraq are referred to by official and media persons as a “war”, America’s military mission in Iraq is officially identified by the Department of Defense as an Operation, and officially identified in military terms as a Campaign. Nevertheless, American’s are dying every day in Iraq. For the first time in all of America’s foreign military missions, the American news media is prohibited from reporting on the return of American casualties of war. By order of George Bush no returning American casualty of Iraq (or Afghanistan) may be reported by the Department of Defense to the American news media. Critics of this Order say that Mr. Bush has prohibited public acknowledgment of returning casualties because television images of American deaths would hurt his re-election hopes. Administration supporters of this Order say that prohibiting public viewing of returning casualties provides family members privacy they need and desire. Critics of this Administration argument say that, to date, not a single family member of an American casualty has objected to the media reporting the return of their loved one. Because American veterans organizations have refused to address this debate the media no longer reports this debate. No American veteran organization has filed a complaint or opposition to George Bush’s order prohibiting public awareness of returning casualties. Also to date, no effort has begun to establish a War Memorial in the Nation’s capitol for an Iraq War Memorial or Global War On Terrorism Memorial. The Vietnam War Memorial was started by one American who demanded the sacrifices of America’s most controversial military mission be forever remembered by the establishment of a memorial located in Washington, D.C. An Iraq or Global War On Terrorism Memorial to honor the sacrifices of American casualties awaits the initiative of one American demanding those deaths be forever honored. America awaits the American who will work to establish this Memorial. Who will that one American be?
