Harvard Announces Free Education For Some
Harvard Announces Free Education For Some
POSTED: 10:01 a.m. EST March 1, 2004 BOSTON -- In an effort to reach out to lower and middle-income families, Harvard University is guaranteeing that students who come from families making less than $40,000 annually will pay nothing for their educations. In addition, the school said it will reduce the financial payouts for families whose incomes are between $40,000 and $60,000 a year. Harvard President Lawrence Summers said the Ivy League school wants to send "the strongest possible message" that it is open to talented students from all economic backgrounds. Students who qualify under the plan will be asked to meet "self-help" requirements through scholarships, work-study and summer jobs. Copyright 2004 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
