Unhappy Skip Caray : 1939 - 2008

Last night Atlanta and the Braves lost the voice of summer baseball in the south. Skip Caray the voice of the Braves for over 30 years died in his sleep. Braves win ! Braves win ! Braves win ! Andy is probably trying to get him to wear a "Yankees Suck " T -shirt on his first day up there. RIP Skip and thanks for making baseball come to life those night I was sitting around a camp fire listening to the Braves game. It's going , it's going itssssssssssss gone !!

The Voice of the Braves

He's with his Dad and they're singin' "Take Me Out To The Ball Game"!

So long, good friend!

Default Had not

heard this. Very sad about his death. When I was in college and worked at night loading trucks for UPS, my Zenith could be programed to come on like an alarm clock. Aways had it on the super station and would wake up in spring, summer, (Braves didn't play much in the fall back then), to the replay of the evenings Braves game. It was his voice I heard for years first thing in the very early early morning.

RIP Skip. Sure your dad's taking good care of you.

My favorite Skip Caray memory:

1992 National League Championship Series

Game 7

Sid Bream slides into home plate to win the game and the series.

"A lotta room in right-center, if he hits one there we can dance in the streets. The 2-1. Swung, line drive left field! One run is in! Here comes Bream! Here's the throw to the plate! He is...safe! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win!...Braves win! They may have to hospitalize Sid Bream; he's down at the bottom of a huge pile at the plate. They help him to his feet. Frank Cabrera got the game winner! The Atlanta Braves are National League champions again! This crowd is going berserk, listen!"

Default Yes he will be missed.

I knew Skip for many years.

My old company, the Atlanta Journal & Constitution had a "sky box" at old Atlanta Fulton County Stadium and a membership at the Stadium Club private restaurant on the club level.

I'd see Skip having lunch at the old Stadium Club whenever the Braves were in town a few times a month. He and I had many a conversation about the Braves on several occasions. He loved to talk about his dad, Harry Caray and his beloved "Cubbies".

Great guy, I was really sad to hear about his passing.

I was at the stadium the night Sid Bream scored that run. What a night!
