Default Flood Fighting in North Dakota

Hey everyone on PF,

Sorry I have not been around lately, I have been busy lately. Wanted to let you know that we are experiencing near, if not soon to be, record flooding in the Red River Valley. My university even canceled classes to allow students to help out and they have been great thus far. Where I live in Grand Forks, the river is at almost 48', which is at major flood stage level. Down river in Fargo (the Red flows north into Canada), they are battling against a record breaking level. We have been fighting hard all along the valley and I personally spent a few hours on the sandbag line in the southern part of Grand Forks yesterday. Needless to say, I am keeping a close eye on things, as my apartment is in a basement. Rest assured, I am currently high and dry, but we in the valley could sure use your thoughts and prayers as we brace for the river. If any of you have family or friends in the area and can't get a hold of them, but want to know what is happening up here, shoot me an email and I will do my best to get back with you within the day.

Best wishes,

Daniel

Take care of yourself and be careful around those waters. We will send some rounds out for the Dakota people. Floods are awful things. Again, be careful.

Thumbs up Daniel,...

...

...Keep the faith, we up here also have the Hudson that floods the banks every year depending on the snowfall, a foot of water is a foot of water when it spills over,...

...and with many older communities built way back when, there are homes nestled at river's edge, and needless to say 6' of water in a celler doesn't work well with the furnance's plans,...

...Be well,...

Like all leveys, This one will fail. Be afraid, be very afraid when trying to hold back Mother nature. Never has worked, never will work.

Sorry

Hey all,

Just a quick update. Yesterday and today, fellow Civil Air Patrol members and I assisted at sandbag central filling and/or loading sandbags. Needless to say, I am tired and sore, but feel good for the work accomplished. The Red has leveled off (not quite a crest, but a good sign anyway). It is at 40.48' at Fargo after peaking at 40.82', which broke the 112-year-old record. Here at Grand Forks, the river is at 48.25' and is expected to rise to 51' this week. We are still watching things closely, as the dikes and levees will have to hold the same level of water for several days. In addition, we may get more snow on Monday, which will only add to the problem. Thanks everyone for your wishes and I will try to post another update if things change in the next couple of days. On a side note, the National Commander of the American Legion will be visiting East Grand Forks tomorrow and I hope to meet him tomorrow evening, as I am Commander of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron in EGF. He was here as part of the National Commander's Tour, but is also coming now because of the flood. I'll let you know how that goes in a different thread. Take care and thanks for your well wishes to us in ND.

Daniel
