![]() Ellensburg,
It's original name was: Robber's Roost It was a wild west town. Thieves from Oregon, Washington, & Idaho use to hide out in Ellensburg. When Washington became a state they were thinking about making Robber's Roost the capitol. But, they didn't think "Robber's Roost" would go over well as a name for a capitol of a state so the name was changed to ellensburg. Name after one of the founding father's wife. Our town had gun fights and all that good stuff you read about in Dodge City, but we didn't become famous. Keith |

![]() Can you Name the Town that Wild Bill Hickok had his famous Gunfight over a Watch on the 21st July, 1865?
a bit of the tale:One incident in particular had a major impact on the birth of an icon of the Old West - the Gunfight in which two lone gunman face off in the middle of a dusty street. There is no evidence that these shootouts occurred with any frequency in the West - after all, who in their right mind would participate in such a dangerous enterprise? However, an incident in Missouri soon after the close of the Civil War did much to inspire the myth. There was no love lost between Wild Bill and Dave Tutt. Hickok had fought for the Union, Tutt for the Confederacy. Their enmity only increased when both became interested in the same woman. The matter came to a head when Tutt took Wild Bill's pocket watch during a poker game and bragged he would parade through the town square wearing his rival's prized possession. At the announced time, Wild Bill stood in the square and warned Tutt not to proceed. Unfazed, Tutt boldly strode towards his enemy and pulled his pistol. Wild Bill simultaneously drew his pistol and fired. Tutt fell - dead. Wild Bill quickly turned and leveled his gun towards a crowd of Tutt's supporters who had gathered nearby, warning them not to interfere. They took the hint. This was the first recorded example of two men taking part in a quick-draw duel. The following month Hickok was acquitted after pleading self-defence. In my childhood kids used to re-enact the gunfight since it took place so close to home.People seem to forget that before the Civil War, Missouri was THE Gateway to the west! ergo the Gateway Arch in St Louis ![]() Again Great Quiz Steve ![]()

![]() Jerry,
Would that gunfight have taken place in Springfield, Missouri? You're right about the face-off gunfights being few and far between. But I remember reading about one that was real interesting. Don't remember all the details... Couple of "Ladies" got into a fight over a man. Stood in the middle of the street and blazed away at each other with derringers or some other little personal protection pistols. When the guns were empty, both women were unscathed so they went at it rolling on the ground with fists and hair pulling, etc. Interesting part is...one of their bullets from the gunfight had hit a bystander...the man they were fighting over! ![]() |
