.....I didn,t see much either...
...mostly ...I didn't understand it either !
...sometimes I wounder what kind of effect it had
in the outcome of the war...
...I know that I was refused firmissions ...
...like when we had a whole packtrain in the open
.....I pitched a bitch over it ....
...FDC at Dong ha prommised a clearer answer when
I threatened to go out and stop them without arty...

after about five minutes they came back up and
said, "....that is a funneral procession....they have
permission to be there....don't you stop them...don't
you go near them...is that clear!..."

I had watch then cross the Ben Hai...come into SVN...
then waltz right between A-2 and A-4 , followed them to
near C-1 ...and watched ..no one from there came out to
inspest this grp from NVN that"have permission to be there".
other strange stuff..
at one point when we got pissed
...the O in FDC simply said, " unless you have Americans
in danger...you might as well not call it in."
....so of the 18mo and 18days ...the last six months
I never called the American FDC once... Just worked it out
with the advisor...and the ARVN TOC to use their 105mms
on A-2,
The last 6 months I was so pissed that I figured
that it was my life...and lived it the way I wanted.....
...including AWOLs to DaNang... wher on one trip a guard
on the bay bridge to us ( had three guys with me) that
they had been told not to F__k with us.
....don't know who did that ...
..wether it was the F/26TAB CO , err Hoa Pham's people

PS Bill I've livedthe 11B and 11C world..an few...and
i'd pick 17cany day ....got to pick our own load....
...weapons to some extent ...
...usually just took a pistol and some sort of M-16 or
SMG ....usually abt 700-900 rds..., two qts Wa,
....cigs, money ,..maybe one C-rat or LRRP ration(freezed
dried meal...goodies ..but no smks in it !)
and traveled the route we chose... usualy 2-10 guys
......was life-of-Riley when things were peaceful .....

There were some strange things observed and not understood on the Z . And permission to fire was complicated and as you say not successful most of the time. Considering the amount of infiltration from the North and the heavy artillery fire I wonder why?
Got the ARVNs to support you? In my day they were from 1st ARVN division and they were very good.

That DMZ was typical border country. At least we honored the Ben Hai part.
That trace must have been growing back when you guys were there . As I remember the heavy winter rains and that hellish hot sun it must have disappeared in growth .
