Salman Rushdie visits North Dakota
Renowned author Salman Rushdie is speaking at my university tomorrow evening at 7PM. Salman Rushdie is author of numerous books, including the highly controversial The Satanic Verses, which elicited a fatwa from the Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989. The Ayatollah considered The Satanic Verses blasphemous to Islam and several persons involved with the book have been hurt or killed by radical Muslims over the years.
He is speaking as part of UND's Writer's Conference. I am looking forward to meeting this man, as he is supposed to be a great author and is not afraid of controversy. I have a feeling that there will be a great discussion tomorrow evening. I will let you all know more about it either tomorrow evening or Wednesday.

I bought his book in support of him when the fatwa came out. I have kept it because it is fascinating. It gave me my first taste of what I call Indian English. What they have done with the language is very colorful. One of the reasons English is such a dominating language is what diverse peoples have added to it. While the French have an Academy to decide what new words to approve, English just says bring it on.

Thought I would share that the event went great, but my local news station interviewed a couple of the SDS crowd (gives media bias a whole new light). Sir Rushdie was very good and cracked a few jokes. He addressed the fatwa, noting that the Ayatollah who issued the fatwa was dead and that the efforts of the Islamic radicals to stifle the book and block free speech failed, that they lost, which elicited a round of applause from the audience. I also now own a signed copy of the controversial book The Satanic Verses and proudly display it in my home and will not hesitate to whip it out at any extremist to scare them .

Brat,
When you say you "will not hesitate to whip it out at any extremist to scare them", are you still talking about the book?
