I assume they are military grid coordinates so I typed them into my GPS. That placed the coordinates about 730 miles North of where I am in Alabama. I then converted the grid to LAT/LONG by changing the units displayed in the GPS. I then typed those into Topozone and it came up in Michigan. To double check, I used Mapquest to give me directions to Michigan from here just to check the distance. It was close. So my guess is that you have some Yankee shorts that have somebody's grid coordinates in the pocket. The descriptions are harder to explain. Whatever they mean, the Barracks (SF) is only 100 meters South of the first building listed. -------------------- "The venerable dead are waiting in my library to entertain me and relieve me from the nonsense of surviving mortals." To pinpoint a location you need two coordinates. All of the locations listed had one number set, not two. Examples: Degrees N 35.25936 W 85.08743 Degrees/Minutes N 35 15.561 W 85 05.246 Degrees/Minutes/Sec N 35 15?33.7 W 85 05?14.7 UTM 16 673984 E 3903482 W MGRS STD 16SFE 73984 03482 MGRS STD+10 16SFQ 73984 03482 Map Fix U:---.--? For example, on a Military Grid Ref System, the prefix "DR" is a sub-grid of a larger area. I originally thought it was 16S, but after typing in 16S and then DR 588 563, the GPS changed it to "16T" automatically. Assuming 16T is correct, I then used the DR and one of the 6 digit grid coordinates. The GPS automatically will convert the 6 digit grid to LAT/LONG if you change the units under the "settings" menu. Once I had the LAT/LONG I went back to Topozone and entered the coordinates and it came up as Michigan. I have never done this type of conversion before but I have used MGRS extensively in the Army. Converting is something we never had to do so I am not really sure I did it right. I am just guessing. -------------------- "The venerable dead are waiting in my library to entertain me and relieve me from the nonsense of surviving mortals." With all the GPS this and that stuff 100 meters off is completely acceptable with the National Guard. Even if your GPS is WAAS enabled 100 meters minus three is not acceptable...unless you are in the Guard/reserves. Another note...if a NG unit calls for live artillery on a training mission, please make sure you are back at the barracks. Six numbers in a grid coordinate will get you within 100 +/-5. Not good enough for the skin on my back. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posts: 2344 | From: Nashville | Registered: Dec 2001 | IP: Logged |
