This morning's Chicago Tribune reports that the wildfires have entered the suburbs of Sydney. At least one person was arrested for setting one of the fires.

The article also said that almost 90% of Australia is experiencing a severe drought, which is the worst in over a century.

I hope you can tell us that you're still safe.

The rate of electrical fires may go up somewhat in our colder months, but the cause of those fires is generally due to people misusing electrical heating devices. Some fires during the holiday season are also caused by people using decorations and other things in which the wiring has deteriorated during the long period of non-use. Of course, improper use of extension cords is also a cause of electrical fires.

There is usually an increase in natural gas or propane related fires at the beginning of the heating season, but those fires are usually caused by poor maintenance (blocked flues, etc.) or by improper installation or replacement of new furnaces, heaters, etc. during the summer.

So you're OK, at least for now, with the fire situation near Sydney?
