Default Springfield Model 1884 History

I own a model 1884 and am trying to determine any history on this gun that I can. Stamped into the bottom of the stock (not what goes against your shoulder) is a number 1 above a letter A, which is above the number 34. I'm thinking that these might have something to do with regiment number or such. Your thoughts are appreciated.
