Any truth to this?
Got this email today, I was wondering if anyone else has heard the same. From what I understood, In God We Trust was going to be inprinted on the edge of the coin??
Subject: Fw: Fw: New Coins....DO NOT ACCEPT U.S. Government to Release New Dollar Coins You guessed it 'IN GOD WE TRUST' IS GONE!!! Who originally put 'In God We Trust' onto our currency? My bet is that it was one of the Presidents on these coins. All our U.S. Government has done is Dishonor them, and disgust me!!! If ever there was a reason to boycott something, THIS IS IT!!!! DO NOT ACCEPT THE NEW DOLLAR COINS AS CHANGE Together we can force them out of circulation. Please send to all on you mail list !!!

Check out this news story. Some were apparently released in error without the inscription. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/...n2543125.shtml

Actually, I believe that this was a mint error. In God We Trust, E Pluribus Unum, and the date of mint are inscribed on the edge of the coin. Now some are upset at this decision as the Mint claims it is to allow more room for the portraits, but I think there may be more to that as well. As for the removal, it is an error as reported by the Mint here http://www.usmint.gov/pressroom/inde...release&ID=755
Look at the section dealing with the coin and you'll see that the motto is supposed to be on the edge. This program is supposed to be like the 50-state quarters and I doubt many will be in circulation.

SH,
The e-mail is TECHNICALLY correct, but NOT for the ominous reasons implied. On the new Presidential dollar coins, the motto (In God We Trust), the DATE, and the mintmark appear on the EDGE of the coin. This is the first time edge lettering has been placed on US coins since 1933. The edge stamping is a separate operation from the obverse and reverse stamping. Approximately 50,000 of the new dollars were misrouted and got out of the mint without the edge lettering. The date and mintmark are missing as well as the motto. The mint discovered the error, has publicly acknowledged the mistake, and it's been fixed. It is a production mistake, nothing more. If you happen to run across one of the errors, it's worth about $50 to $60.

And technically with out these identifying designators any of them 50,000 dollars could be considered counterfeit by the Treasury Dept.and confiscated without compensation!

Jerry,
Those coins, even though they have an error, were officialy released by the US Mint and are therefore legal tender. Same same for the handful of 1943 copper cents that are known, and the few known 1944 steel cents. Even though not intentional, they were officially released and are legal to own. Illegal coins would be coins NOT officially released, such as the 1933 Twenty Dollar gold coins, the 1974 aluminum cents, or the 1964-D Peace silver dollars (if any of those made it out).

It is written, "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's. Render unto God that things that are God's". IMHO; we don't need "In God We Trust" on our currency. I'll spend those coins if I get them.

Rather than spend the defective coins, you'd be better off saving thme for awhile, as the price will undoubtedly increase.

Scout,
Sure, there's always that option but with 50K in circulation, I doubt it will gain much value in my lifetime.

Doc
Granted, the situation involving the defective coins is not comparable to the "inverted airmail stamp, but out of 5 million coins to be minted correctly, just figure the odds of some collector really wanting your coin. Check with some local, reputable coin dealers before cashing in! Then there's always Ebay.....
