The guys and gals working the routes and the post offices do the best they can. As usual it is management.

1CAV,

You're right on that point! As a former USPS employee I've seen management up close and I've spoken with current and form USPS employees. Managers and postmasters are people who were so incompetent delivering or handling mail they were promoted. Despite having an excellent delivery record, I was let go from one PO so the postmaster could hire his niece who quit after 3 months saying the job was too hard. My fellow carriers told his he shoud call me and hire me back but by that time I had another non-USPS job. His loss.

My wife bought one of those computer programs that do your postage for you and you just put a sticker on the letter, etc. After she had been using it for about two weeks we got a call for one of us to come by the Limestone post office. I went and the guy there said the program hadn't been working right and he had been putting stamps on our mail for us. I offered to pay him but he wouldn't take a dime. He told me to tell my wife to call him and he would help with getting the thing to work. They talked on the phone for a while but never did get it to work.

That must have been a genuine genius at the Post Office! We use the Stamps.com system, and it has saved us a bunch of money in not having to drive to the post office in town for stamps.

And we have another 'genius' out here that sometimes delivers the mail, at least when it suits him. One year, we were expecting a large tax refund check, and he sent it back to the IRS, marked it as 'undeliverable.' We had been here at the same address for 6 years prior, and it took us another 30+ days for the IRS to re-issue the check. Some service.

Default ah ha Brice

Now I know why you hate Postal Workers because they returned your check to sender. I don't blame you but its probably the fault of the manager/postmaster who hired the incompentent person who did it. [I would guess it wasn't the regular letter carrier] Every couple years my VA check gets delivered next door.]

SS checks; the 1st of every month the phone calls would start even before the PO opened at 8AM. "Where's my check? I always get my check by 8 o'clock!" Then we'd have to tell them...again...that the carriers don't even finish putting up the mail until about 10 then they do their routes. "Don't you try to give me that crap! I always get my check by 8 o'clock so where is it?" ad nauseum. We would try to convince them to make out the paperwork to have the checks deposited directly into their bank accounts but they'd always come back with stories about the Great Depression and how they don't trust banks, etc. etc. And that's reason #51 why we have the term "going postal".

Default Such a deal!

I think its one of the best things government does and for dam sure one of the best deals the consumer gets..
"course, thats not saying much. But to get a letter picked up at your mailbox and delivered reliably across the country to the recipients mailbox--for $.42??
I would just like to see Fedex or UPS try to pick up mail every working day at my mailbox and deliver it every day for what the PO charges! Not going to happen. There's no law against youre giving them a letter to 1 day mail tho---Ive done it.
Reliable, honest delivery of mail and parcels? Wanrt to trust that to unregulated industry? Having dozens of delivery services would be a nightmare.
I use the junk mail for starting fires in the fireplace. It doesn't bother me they send it, I can throw it away faster than they can send it.
I subscribe to 6 magazines----Fedex will deliver those to my mailbox for what the PO does? Forget it!

There's lots to complain about--I certainly have my stories---but the PO is still one of the best services the consumer still gets from the govt---at a more than reasonable price.
Thats why the republicans hate it and want to end it.

this is the difference between Republicans and Democrats as I see it. The Republicans run on a position that government can't do anything right and when elected they prove it. Democrats say government can do anything and when elected they prove that wrong.

Default Level the playing field

“Hate” is too strong of a word; I don’t hate people, the USPS, or my neighbor. I do hate the human manifestations of bigotry, stupidity, arrogance, and/or treason. The mental midget who sent back my IRS refund check also sent back some business checks that I had ordered from my bank, which meant yet another trip into town to visit with the Post Master who is a bout as sharp as a beach ball.

The VA still mailing checks? Social Security system still mailing checks? By now, all check-mailing/creating agencies should be required to use EFT; it’s quicker, safer, more reliable and cheaper than the USPS. When I retired from the Army, I was required to have a checking account to which the check from DFAS could be deposited. Same-same Social Security system. Same-same my private pension checks. Any person who relies on the USPS to deliver these checks to their home is taking big risks with non-delivery, check theft, identity theft, and frostbite just walking out to the mailbox (for you Yankees!).

I suspect that given a chance and the same tax perks that the USPS has, FedEx and UPS would compete very effectively for the 1st class mail service. The private carriers are tightly regulated by both the FCC and the FAA, so their being an unregulated industry is nothing more than a transparent ‘red herring’ thrown out by our resident socialist.
