Australian government and Naval Group reach agreement

According to information published by Australian Associated Press on March 23, 2021, Naval- Group and the federal government have locked in a commitment for a local spend of at least 60 per cent in the construction of Australia's new fleet of submarines.

The company said on Tuesday the commitment had been included in the program's Strategic Partnering Agreement related to the contract for the 12 Attack Class subs.

Naval Group global Chief Executive Pierre Eric Pommellet visited Australia last month for talks with commonwealth officials on a range of issues including the 60 per cent local spend.

The Attack-class submarine is a future class of submarines for the Royal Australian Navy based on the Shortfin Barracuda proposal by French shipbuilder Naval Group to replace the Collins-class submarines. The class will enter service in the early 2030s with construction extending into the late 2040s to 2050. The Program is estimated to cost $50 billion and will be the largest, and most complex, defence acquisition project in Australian history.

The Attack Class submarines are based on France’s Barracuda submarine, which are nuclear attack submarine (SSN).
