Since the uniform appears to be in such good shape, the wearer must have been an advisor to the French Army.

A Thank You to all who have helped. However, this seems to be a very difficult uniform. I have posted elsewhere and to date no one has been 100%. Thanks Much..Steve

That may be due more to the sometime habit of troops everywhere to "customize" their uniforms.

I perceive that we've nailed it about as close as is possible.

Hello,

Yes, it does seem that WWI Italian is correct. However, there are some nagging differences..The hat seems to escape any known picture to date. Small things like the dress boots don't seem to match pictures that are close. Somehow, it would seem, that there should be a picture on file in the vast internet databases that exactly matches--maybe I am naive..
I am an investigator by trade..details, details.. will be the death of me I suppose..

Thanks

Steve

Thanks in advance,

First of all, thanks to everyone else who attempted to assist. David got a hold of me as well, but being away from my library, I have had to rely on the Internet alone. That said, you have a very fine painting. Based on the painting and a few websites, my conclusion is that (like a few others concluded) an Italian World War I uniform. The collar insignia corresponds to the soldier being in a particular Infantry Division. Assuming the color is correct and the insignia remained unchanged between the World Wars, the soldier was either a member of the Cagliari or Cosseria division. The ribbons are a bit trickier given the possible difference in color. I would say that the solid blue one is the Cross of Military Valor, while I can't identify the other one, but it is white and red. The grade insignia appears to be one of the corporal grades. I hope this helps and apologize for not getting to this until now.
