You're right, Keith.
It's always a sad tragedy when these young men are taken in a forest fire.
I've cross-country skied all over the Methow Valley around Winthrop, Twisp, and Early Winters. Some very rugged country higher up.

I think Dodge
If I remember correctly, Dodge blamed himself more than others blamed him. This was in the early years of forrest fire fighting and the learning curve was just beginning. I really believe it was one those tragic accidents that we learn from. The conditions that sparked the tragedy are now carefully monitored. The Winthrop fire is so tragic because it was so preventable. Poor judgement and questionable leadership saw Three Young Men and One Young Woman die. So very sad.

I'm not sure who the singer is in this tribute, but the song was originally written by James Keelaghan. It's title is Cold Missouri Waters, and it was inspired by the book by Norman Maclean. It's been sung by a few singers and groups.
