VFW Action Corps Weekly - March 8, 2021
Re: https://www.vfw.org/advocacy/grassro...n-corps-weekly

As of March 08, 2021:

VFW Virtual March Legislative Conference:

Last week, the VFW virtually held the annual March Legislative Conference. VFW National Legislative Committee members lead their Department delegations along with the VFW-SVA Fellows to present the VFW’s legislative priorities to members of Congress and their staffers. Attendees have showcased their legislative meetings in social media posts. Check out #VFWAdvocacy, #StillServing, and #FORVETERANS to see how the VFW is working hard to ensure veterans voices are heard on Capitol Hill.

Legislation Introduced to Improve Adaptive Automobile Grant Program:

Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Susan Collins (R-ME), and Reps. Daniel Meuser (R-PA) and David Trone (D-MD) introduced legislation to improve the VA adaptive automobile grant program. S. 444 and H.R. 1361 would allow eligible disabled veterans to receive an adaptive automobile grant every 10 years. Currently, they may only receive one adaptive automobile grant during their lifetime, despite the fact that automobiles are typically only useful for 10 years.

VFW Commemorates 30th Anniversary of Operation Desert Storm:

Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021, marked the 30th anniversary of the conclusion of Operation Desert Storm. The operation lasted 43 days from Jan. 17 - Feb. 28, 1991, and involved several hundred thousand service members. The VFW and its Auxiliary members will always be thankful for the service and sacrifice of all veterans who served during the Gulf War. Veterans who served in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn are eligible to complete the Gulf War Registry health exam to identify possible long-term health problems that may be linked to their military service. Please contact your local VA Environmental Health Coordinator to schedule an exam.

March is Women’s History Month:

Women veterans comprise approximately 10% of the veteran population and are the fastest-growing cohort within the veteran community. A great way to show support for women veterans is to ensure their voices are heard. The University of Alabama is seeking women-veteran participants in a survey about your health care experiences. The results of the study are intended to help assess the needs of women veterans. Take the survey and share it with other women veterans.

AARP Foundation Providing Free Tax Assistance:

AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide is available to assist people with filing their state and federal tax returns. Tax-Aide can provide in-person service, virtual assistance, and hybrid options for assistance. While the nationwide program is designed with individuals over 50 years old in mind, it is open to everyone free of charge.

O Almighty Lord God, who neither slumberest nor sleepest; Protect and assist, we beseech thee, all those who at home or abroad, by land, by sea, or in the air, are serving this country, that they, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore in all perils; and being filled with wisdom and girded with strength, may do their duty to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
