Clayton III, originally from O'Donnell, Texas, served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 until 1980. He served in Vietnam from 1970 until 1971 as part of the Naval Advisory Group at Cua Viet assigned to Vietnamese Mine Interdiction Division 92 where they operated on the Cua Viet River. He took part in Operation Lam Son 719. In addition to his service in Vietnam, Sumner served aboard the USS Dash at Little Creek Amphibious Base, Virginia,1960-1963 and 1965-1966, in Mine Squadron Ten in Charleston, SC 1963-1965 and 1971-1975, as a Navy Recruiter in Lubbock, Texas 1966-1970, in the Service Craft Squadron at Norfolk Navy Base, Norfolk, Virginia, 1975-1979, and aboard thye USS Santa Barbara, based at Goose Creek Ammunition Base in Goose Creek, South Carolina, 1979-1980. Sumner now lives in Lubbock, Texas. |

He was first sent to Vietnam June of 1967 and was assigned as the Maintenance Officer to the 69th Maintenance Battalion. After six months in that position he was reassigned as the Battalion Commander of the 63rd Maintenance Battalion at Da Nang. He returned back to the United States in June of 1968 and remained in the Army for fifteen more years. He retired as a colonal in 1982. Interview conducted by Gary Hayes. |
