Default James ....

there is no mystery about money and being rich in the Bible. Never was. Here is one of my favorite chapters. Key passages are numbers 6,7,8,9,10, 17,18,19.

Your soul goes where your heart is...be it money, pornography, lust, greed, hate, or anything else we become obsessed with. Mentioning only money and/or the rich misses the whole point.

"10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."

Truly, anything in this world can be understood or solved by "following the money".................

1 Timothy 6
1 Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.
2 And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
13 I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;
14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

Decided to jump in any way.....

Larry

Larry

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKay, Lar, here we go:
Now this is a letter from Paul to Timothy and one of the things we know about Paul is that he was politically influenced at this time on account of being in jail--he was writing saying"Oh yes, obey your masters all of you" because he was trying to get out of jail by truckling up like a good un. This is the kinda stuff that always looks good to the parole board. Its important to realize that what we're getting is Paul's viewpoint here, not Jesus's, and Paul would be the first to admit his own faults
The problem trying to apply this particular passsage into daily lives is that in our society we have no masters as refferred to here--a servant/master relationship. According to our political documents, what we have here is a free association of men and women bound to gether by community.
The rich are not our masters, well, theoretically anyway and Paul's exhortations to serve yr master like a good boy are contrary to a lot of what Jesus said. I'm sure this passage above was used to justify slavery too. they useta preach in the Baptist church down South that a runaway slave was STEALING from his master. True Fact! Har, what wacky stuff religious people come up with sometimes, not to mention Southerners, those zany pranksters.
Here's some words from The Son Of God himself.
19Matthew20:
The young man saith unto Him, all these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
21Jesus said unto him, If thou will be perfect, go and sell that thou hast and give to the poor and then thou shall have treasures in Heaven: and come and follow me.
22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful for he had great possessions
23Then said Jesus unto his disciples Verily I say unto you that a rich man shall hardly enter the kingdom of Heaven
24And again I say unto you it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God

Now where does having an economic policy that specifically benefits the rich come into this??Thats the $64K question here, especially for the side that always holds itself to be the most Godly. I mean the whole Republican wheeze is that making rich people rich or richer is good for society--thats capitalism in a nutshell--looks like its making em more unChristian to me and harder for em to get into Heaven.
I bet that Eternal Hell Fire just HAS to hurt!!
Taking their money and giving it to the poor looks sorta to me like just what the doctor ordered here, if the doctor was Jesus Christ. And I mean them whining about paying too much taxes!!If youre rich in America, youre winning in the best of all possible worlds, JUST BY DEFINITION!!! We Democrats just gonna take some of that excess off you and make sure the Po folks be fed and clothed, just like Christ would want us to do--I mean He WAS talking about redistribution of wealth wasn't He?.

Now PAul was an itersting character, too just like James--he spent a lot of time getting himself out of the hoosegow and his writings show it

James

Guys I have been reading all the quotes you have posted, me being an uneducated man knows but a few things. 1) I believe in God as my creator and Jesus as my savorier. 2) and here is the kicker, from my point of view, you guys are all trying to put a political spin on these things. Oh the Republicans are for the rich the Democrats are better because there for the poor. Show me one poor politician. Show one, just one politician that says or does anything out of the goodness of his heart or from passages from the bible.

I am a simple man, I drink coffee, pop and beer. I chew Copenhagen and look at pretty girls when they walk by. I am not a religious man, I should take the time and become more so. I believe what I believe and feel this posts has turned into nothing more than political wrangling.

Sorry if I have offended anyone, just my own personal thoughts.

Default Not being particularly

Religous or political I have somewhat enjoyed reading the dialogue between James and Larry. Kind of an insight to their outlook on life and the world.

Catman, I hope that you were not advocating that they not continue the exchange. As long as a post does not get personnel I don't see any problem with expressing ideas no matter where they lead.

No not at all, just putting my two cents in. I truly welcome any and all post and hover around this site 24/7. If i came across as wishing it to end, i do apologize.

David... does he not draw $250,000 a year in retirement? I do agree he has done more for the underprivileged than any other politician but is still far above the poverty line.

Job and King David were far above the poverty line as well. So was the prodigal sons father and many other leading people in the Bible. The Bible never said one needs to be poor to be a good Christian, it does however, state clearly that the temptations that arise when one is wealthy may well be hard to overcome.

Cool KATH AND I

had breakfast with James yesterday morning [my turn to buy] and pinned down more of an itinerary for our inva.... er, trip to Nam. Doesn't look like we're going to make it all the way up to Hanoi. Due to air fares, it's more practical [and cheaper] to fly in and out of Tan Son Nhut. Just too much ground to cover in our alotted time. We will make it as far as the DMZ, though. Will still start out with a couple of days in the Saigon area. Will probably go see the tunnels of Cu Chi. Neither one of us were in that AO. Will still get some beach time around Nha Trang, and then head up into the Central Highlands to Ban Me Thuot, Pleiku, and Kontum. Then back down to the coast, headed north for the DMZ through Chu Lai, Danang, etc.. Fit in what we can, and beat feet back to Saigon for yet another departure [my third] out of The Nam. Once again, subject to change.

When I first got to Ft. Bragg after my tour with the 101st, I had a ZIPPO lighter that I had bought at the PX during my 2wk. stay in Saigon [another story]. It was eventually lost or stolen in one of the several bars that I frequented in Fayetteville. On one side it had the "Screaming Eagle" insignia, and on the other I had had the prayer "Yea, tho I walk through the Valley Of The Shadow Of Death I shall fear no Evil, for I know that I'm the Baddest Son Of A Bitch in The Valley" engraved on it. I bring this up as my contribution to the other subject matter that this thread has morphed into . Makes for some interesting reading, boys.
