South of the border, they see the U.S.-Mexican War as just a land grab by greedy gringos. As Americans, we were taught that, in the name of Manifest Destiny, we were to expand our borders from sea to shining sea. As it was, we almost went to war with Great Britain over the Oregon Territory, too. Our diplomatic efforts with the Mexican government fell woefully short in attempting to avert a conflict. Of course, the Mexicans were just as eager to flex their military muscle as we were. What would the map of the U.S look like had that war been lost or stalemated? The western border would've gone northwest from Texas up to Oregon and the riches of the gold rush of '49 would've gone into the coffers in Mexico City! Who knows, maybe they would, today, have to protect their borders from American "wetbacks" going south for work. Wouldn't that be a kick in the ass?
And I agree, war does indeed suck!

BLUE & DOC...
Can't disagree with either of you that: "War sucks", since the truism gets proven over and over and over, and from century to century, to century.
However, on that what land rightfully belongs to WHOM (or not), believe that too is also a mute point. Most all countries on earth were taken at one time or another by conquest and/or in battle from this people or that people and: "Might makes right". Sad, but true, and even despite The Local ACLU or more worldly UN. In Australia, ask the aboriginies about such. Or, and staying close to home, just ask Los Indios of Mexico and The American Indians how well they regarded their Spanish, British and French discoverers and land-grabbers from those whom were there also for thousands of years. Hey, that: "Johnny-come-latelies" like the Americans and Mexicans are still arguing over territory they ripped-off initially a while back,...should suprise no one. Call it: "Manifest Destiny" or whatever,...that's what most all land-grabbers in The World did. Hell, even in Fiji, one tribe probably butchered-the-hell out of another tribe, just for their land, cocoanuts and palms, before The French showed-up and explained to them that "They" were the true masters of the universe,...just like nowadays. Dan & Recon -
Funny stories about those boundary lines on land... we know that every fence post (probably) in or out of town is almost certainly NOT on the correctly surveyed property line. On the other hand, we know Rand-McNally does not do more than draw lines... These ides always make me laugh, if land wars weren't usually so tragic. It's a matter of inches, but folks surely do get het up about it! |
