I am from the US and can thus apologize only for my own nation. I
would love to see the Vietnamese apologize as well.

Lenny: Viet Govt will not apologize to the people because they now
have peace in Vietnam and the cost was highly paid in the sacrifice of
many lives in order to restore peace and unity to Vietnam. Do you ever
get the education from this side or just look from the US/western
thinking? It is important to look from both sides in order to
understand. Very difficult for the foreigner to understand sometimes.
In my view, you can apologize for your nation, but what does it do
when you have no power to change anything. The power lies in your
politicans and if they apologise it benefits the bilateral
relationship between two nations... ultimately, that is where the next
journey begins.

Lenny,

If you'll visit your petition site
and view the 17 signers
you'll
see that you are pretty much alone in your desire to apologize for
war deaths resulting from a war caused by communist invasion of one
of our SEATO allies.

Perhaps if you reword your petition to apologize for for the
many deaths resulting from the US abandoning the Vietnamese to the
tender mercies of a one-party totalitarian dictatorship, you would
find greater support.

Dai: I agree with you. The situation was made far worse when the US
left because then the real hunting began and continues even today. Ho
Chi Minh made a public announcement at the end of the withdrawal that
all traces of those who supported the US will be hunted down and
killed. Not everyone in the South supported the US forces... many were
frightened and did not understand war. They simply wanted to live in
peace. It is the politicians who make the choices for the people. I am
sorry that the US lost so many army men and I went to the wall in
WAshington to pay my respects to them. But my heart goes out too, to
the families that suffer still as a result of the US war in Vietnam.
For them, the war continues.

Ho was alive at the end of the withdrawl? I thought he died Sept. 2,
1969.

That may well be the silliest statement made here this year. They
didn't understand war? How could they not? They'd been living in it
all their lives! "They wanted to live in peace" is quite simplistic;
of course they did, most people in this world want to live in peace.
