This who paid there debt is interesting.
Been doing lots of research on the question. According to the (bean counters) no nation completely paid off their debts. Britian kept paying on their loan until all the loans were forgiven by congress in 1966. They were the only ones who actually paid on their debt.

Finland is amazing. I think the first people to used the one armed salute (as opposed to the one finger) was ancient Rome. Now who invented the one fingered salute?

Fred
Let the truth be known it was my great great great grandfather.....During one of the many wars that occured in Poland, He was crawling around in a drunken stupor when a very small land mine went off removing all but the center finger. After the healing process he would walk around waving to people and they would just laugh. where he would reply "phuck you". The people in this small town associated the finger and "phuck you' and it soon grew world wide.....and that ladies and gentlemen is how the middle finger salute orignated .....True story

The answer to the "stiff-armed salute" question:
There is more than one correct answer! If you said ROME (meaning ancient Rome, the Roman Empire), YOU ARE CORRECT! That is where the salute originated. If you said ITALY, YOU ARE ALSO CORRECT! It became the national salute of fascist Italy when Benito Mussolini took power in 1922. If you had said THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, YOU WOULD ALSO BE CORRECT! From 1892 until 1942 it was the salute that accompanied the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag. In 1942 President Roosevelt initiated and Congress passed the Flag Code Bill of 1942 which changed the salute to the right hand over the heart.

Goose Stepping
OK gang, who started goose stepping?
Who still uses it? (this is a bizarre step, I've never been able to do it right)

Goose step...
I have no idea where "Der Stechschritt" began. Pretty sure the Russians still use it. I've never been able to do it either. There's probably a "technique" that you have to learn to make it smooth and co-ordinated.
