Heroes Come In All Shapes, Sexes, Colors & Creeds
?So what is a hero?? Is he (or she) a steadfast figure, standing tall before adversity, lance or shot!? Possibly, this person supplies the words that stir an inner fire, or maybe they are just the everyday individual, who when called upon in time of peril, drops all, at the risk of ridicule or even death, to champion that which they feel to be correct or true!
Washington was a hero, as was Lafayette! Molly Pitcher was a hero, Ethan Allen was a hero, and even David Crockett was a hero! Is the elevation to hero limited to a test of arms alone, or could it perhaps, also encompass beliefs, as well as actions and ideology! Nathan Hale was a hero, as was Thomas Paine and Patrick Henry. And when it comes to heroism, many the world over have displayed the stuff of heroism, if not the title that goes along with it! We have all heard of men and women like Chesty Puller and Mary Walker (Only woman awarded the Medal of Honor), but how many unsung patriots, who?s dedication and idealism was unseen by human eyes, rest silently beneath the sod, known but to God alone? And is a man (or woman) any less brave who served in silence? Or is a patriot who fell before his (or her) name was known, or who?s labors were usurped by the fame hungry, any less a hero because their deeds were unrecognized? And who were people like Crispus Mattox (Boston Massacre), Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (A Vindication of The Rights of Women), or Button Guinette (A little-known signer of the Declaration of Independence)! In my opinion, heroes one and all! Most of all, there are the countless heroes who rest in eternal honor beneath tombstones, crosses and even in unmarked graves, world-wide! The multitude of American Patriots who fought and bled, cried and died, to preserve our freedom and liberties! Tomorrow (Veterans Day - November 11, 2002) is their day of remembrance, and let no man ever forget the sacrifices that these ?Hero/Patriots? made to insure that which all many of us now take for granted!! ?Veterans Day Is Not Only A Holiday, It Is An Eternal Debt Of Honor!!? VERITAS
