![]() Maraniss reexamines tarnished war legacy
(EXCERPT) By Ron Wynn, rwynn@nashvillecitypaper.com October 10, 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author David Maraniss’ previous books have closely examined the life, accomplishments and legacy of President Bill Clinton and legendary football coach Vince Lombardi. But his newest book takes a fresh look at perhaps the most controversial chapter in American history, the Vietnam War. They Marched Into Sunlight: War and Peace Vietnam And America: October 1967 (Simon & Schuster) profiles two explosive days in which student anti-war protests dovetailed with a tragic ambush in South Vietnam. Maraniss, who’ll appear this weekend at the Southern Festival of Books, said that revisiting the Vietnam conflict, particularly during his interviews with soldiers, taught him some invaluable lessons. “I now understand how deeply true the line is about it’s the soldiers who really live and understand the impact of war,” Maraniss said...
