Ancient Greek Civil War
Victor Davis Hanson has wriitten another great book .
"A War Like No Other " about the Pelopennisian War over two thousand years ago. The Greek city states offered a great deal to civilization, they were early experiments in democracy . Hanson , a classicist scholar with a talent for writing very readable books , has explained those tumultous times that when the Greek city states had banded together to fight off outside invaders they were at their best . But when they had defeated the invaders the loose alliances turned on themselves . . It began an evolution in warfare that left the ritualized phalanx combat for light troops , total war and an unfortuate relapse into barbarism . Hanson's book should be beside Thuycidides' classic work " The Pelopennisain War " A heck of a good book . Goes up on the shelf with his earlier classic " A Western Way of War" |
