(EXCERPT) Posted 2004-01-05 This week in the magazine and here online (see Fact), Mark Singer profiles the Democratic Presidential hopeful Howard Dean, the doctor and former governor of Vermont who has become an insurgent leader in the primary race, in part owing to his early criticism of the war in Iraq. In this article from 2002, Joe Klein profiles Dean’s Democratic rival Senator John Kerry, of Massachusetts, who supported military action in Iraq, and who was himself a war hero. On a rainy October morning, the day after Senator John Forbes Kerry, of Massachusetts, announced that he would reluctantly vote to give President George W. Bush the authority to use lethal force against Iraq, the Senator sat in his Capitol Hill office reminiscing about another war and a...
