![]() 1. Most know that four were arrested at the public meetings on the Stryker
Brigade on Tuesday evening, and another three last night. The first four will be arraigned tomorrow morning at the Alakea District Court at 1100 Alakea Street, Courtroom 7A at 8:30 am. Come out to show your support! Kyle Kajihiro's account of what happened at the first two hearings is appended to the end of this message. 2. NION activists are making plans to go up to the Turtle Bay hearing on Tuesday evening, November 4, to protest/testify against the Strykers. It would be great if we could have a big presence at this final hearing on Oahu. Plans (including transportation) will be sent out to everyone within the next two days. Reserve Tuesday late afternoon and evening! 3. Veterans will speak out against military expansion in Hawai`i on Olelo Channel 53 on October 31 (6:30 pm), November 1 (8:00 pm) and November 3 (3 pm). Partiicpating will be Sparky Rodrigues (Navy, Vietnam, Malama Makua), Skippy Ioane (Army, Vietnam, King's Landing), Fred Dodge (Army, Malama Makua), Steve Tayama, Air Force, Nation of Hawai`i). 4. October 25th was the largest demonstration against the war since the Iraq war. There were demonstrations in Washington D.C. (50-75,000), San Francisco (15-20,000), and in smaller cities across the U.S., as well as in cities across Australia, Europe, and in South Asia. What was striking in some U.S. cities was the participation of contingents of families of military personnel. While the numbers at the demonstrations were not as large as hoped for, that so many demonstrated against the occupation of Iraq was a sign of determination in the face of tremendous obstacles. News of the demonstrations (especially in the U.S.) were carried in major newspapers around the world, reaching millions with the news of ongoing resistance. We should be proud to be among the hundreds of thousands who were out in the streets on October 25th! ***************** message from Kyle Kajihiro ******************** RESISTING THE ARMY STRYKER BRIGADE: THREE MORE ARRESTED On October 28, 2003, the first night of public meetings to take testimony about the Army's proposed Stryker Brigade, four persons were arrested protesting at the Honolulu Country Club against the proposed Army Stryker Brigade. Gwen Kim ('Ohana Koa / Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific), Steve Tayama (Nation of Hawai'i), Bokdong Yoon (Weekly Peace Vigil) and myself, Kyle Kajihiro (American Friends Service Committee - Hawai'i and DMZ-Hawai'i / Aloha 'Aina) were arrested for entering the public meeting at an exclusive country club with our signs. After holding signs in vigil outside Honolulu Country Club for an hour, our group gathered together in preparation for going into the public meeting. Kumu Hula Victoria Holt Takamine of 'Ilio'ulaokalani Coalition offered a pule asking for strength, guidance and wisdom from the ancestral dieties. Security was tight at the front entrance. As we began walking, a security guard told us that we were not allowed onto the premises with our signs. None of us have ever been prevented from holding signs and banners in public hearings. We argued that the meeting was a public meeting called by the Army to recieve testimony about the proposed Stryker Brigade, and that our signs were our testimony, but they refused us entry. Instead of holding meetings in public community venues like schools and community centers as they have in the past, the Army scheduled all of its six public meetings about the Stryker Brigade at exclusive private country clubs and resorts, a tactical move to suppress opposition to their plans, and exclude dissenting views. Several people slipped past the guards and got half-way down the driveway when we were stopped by the police and security. In the standoff with the police for around 40 minutes, we refused to leave our signs behind or leave the premises. As police reinforcements arrived, we were arrested and charged with criminal trespass. The following evening, around 8:00 pm October 29, 2003, three more persons active with DMZ-Hawai'i / Aloha 'Aina were arrested at the Helemano Plantation for protesting the Army Stryker Brigade. Around 20 people joined in a circle to pule. We marched into the facility chanting I Ku Mau Mau and E Iho Ana. The guards refused to let people through with our signs. Around thirty people began chanting and speaking to the security guards (most were Pacific Islanders) about the hewa (wrong) they were party to. Some appeared visibly shaken, tearful and ashamed of what they were being ordered to do. After a long showdown with the security guards, Kupuna Dr. Kekuni Blaisdell (Ka Pakaukau and Kanaka Maoli Tribunal Komike), Terri Keko'olani Raymond ('Ohana Koa / Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific) and Pete Shimazaki Doktor (Hawai'ï Okinawa Network and American Friends Service Committee) attempted to push past a wall of security guards to enter the Army public meeting and oppose the Army's Stryker Brigade. They were arrested and charged with criminal trespass. >From inside the meetings the reports said that the overwhelming majority were strongly opposed to the Stryker brigade, and furthermore, were outraged by the Army's suppression of dissent and arrest of protesters. Tomorrow DMZ-Hawai'i/Aloha 'Aina will protest at the Army public meeting in Makaha. We anticipate a large turnout. Mahalo to all who were arrested for protesting the Stryker brigade and special recognition to all who were arrested for asserting our rights to protest. Organizations in solidarity include 'Ohana Koa / NFIP, American Friends Service Committee -Hawai'i, Ka Pakaukau, Kanaka Maoli Tribunal Komike, Nation of Hawai'i, 'Ilioulaokalani, Hui Malama o Makua, Not In Our Name Hawai'i, Refuse and Resist, Na Kupuna o Maui, Ke Kia'i, Hui Malama I Na Kupuna, Life of the Land, Hawai'i Interfaith Alliance, Protect Kaho'olawe Kaua'i 'Ohana, Malu 'Aina. Mahalo to the 'Olelo cable television crew for documenting the action and the proceedings. Mahalo to Wayson Chow and the Hawaii Bill of Rights Coalition, Marti Townsend, the ACLU, Eric Seitz for legal support. CALL TO ACTION: Come down to the Makaha resort (84-826 Makaha Valley Rd) on Wednesday, 10/30/03 (5:30 - 7:00 pm Rally outside; 7:00 - 10 pm go inside to oppose the Stryker) to continue our protest of the Army stryker brigade and to assert the right to protest and free speech against the repressive measures of the Army. We need lots of bodies and testifiers to keep the pressure on the military and politicians like Senator Inouye, to stop forcing the Strykers on Hawai'i. BRING SIGNS AND OTHER VISUAL, WRITTEN AND ORAL TESTIMONY! SEE YOU THERE!!! STOP THE MILITARY LAND GRAB! KU'E MILITARY!!! CLEAN UP, NOT BUILD UP!
