Here in Ft. Walton Beach (pop. 25,000) we don't have much violent crime.
Home Invasion type crime happens at most no more than once or twice a year on the average.

In the last six weeks we have had FOUR attacks on people in their homes.

The last happened here last Saturday. To a Vietnam vet and his family.
He heard noises outside and as he got up to investigate, three young males came busting in. They started beating him and demanding money.
They knocked him back against the book shelves in his living room, and as he was going down he reached up to the shelf next to his TV and grabbed his M1911A1 .45 automatic.

He got off two shots and saw nothing but asses and elbows headed for the front door.

He was a little banged and bruised but okay.

Two hours later a young male showed up at the hospital with a through and through gunshot wound to the shoulder...approximately .45 caliber...that he got while he was cleaning his gun.

They used a pry-bar taken from a previous home invasion to break through his door. That elderly man wasn't so lucky. He was stabbed to death.

Our Sheriff's Department spokesperson is advising that "there's nothing to worry about. This happens rarely. You stand a lot greater chance of being a victim of email fraud than home invasion. Make sure everyone in your household knows to call 911 immediately."

Folks, if anybody breaks into my house while I'm there, I intend to make them sicker than hell. I'm gonna just ruin somebody's day.

If someone breaks into my occupied home, which would be more useful...

a gun in my hand or a cop on the telephone?

Let's get some rocket scientists together and try to figure that out.

Yeah, right! Just ask them kindly to stop beating you so you can make a phone call. After all, you wouldn't want to deprive those poor misguided drug-addled youths of their civil rights!

A man's home is no longer his castle; its a storage unit for for things to be stolen by those scumbags. Damn! What do they want us to do?; put out stuff out on the lawn so they can just drive by in a stolen car and pick out what they want?

Bad situation here last night with a home invasion. 2 adults and 2 children killed. I don't care what all the politicians are saying, it's getting bad out there.

Im a firm believer in every citizen who can legally arm themselves, should, and remember....."A dead man tells no tales"

That comment from your sherrif's department is indicative of the mentality that is more part of the problem than the solution. I would have advised, "make sure everyone in your household knows how to use a handgun, and has one nearby at all times." What this country needs is more dead muggers.

Guns around the house make me nervous. After my encounter with a bear camping last year I thought about it for a while and got me a long filet knife. Anything that can cut just by touching it is a potent fighting tool. Bears are usually encountered in places that guns are not allowed such as state or national parks but filet knives are considered cooking utensils. And I figure if anyone is in my house they are going to be surprised. I think it is an excellent second choice if you can't stand to be around guns.
