(EXCERPT) A time capsule filled with tributes for those who never came
home is buried in South Beach

September 08, 2003, by STEPHANIE SLEPIAN STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE

The morning began at Fort Wadsworth with a mass in honor of Father
Vincent Capodanno, killed in Vietnam 36 years ago.

Hours later, it ended at his memorial in South Beach on the street
that bears his name.

Behind the monument to the chaplain -- a Medal of Honor recipient who
died in a hail of bullets while aiding a wounded Marine -- a concrete
time vault was buried yesterday.

James Capodanno placed a copy of "The Grunt Padre" inside.

Along with the book that pays tribute to his brother's life, flowers
and flags, photos and T-shirts were committed to the ground in a
solemn ceremony that had all the markings of a military funeral.

The colors were massed. A prayer was offered by Monsignor James
Dorney. There was a ceremonial volley. "Taps" was played.

Buried on this bright September day were also the tributes left at the
Vietnam Wall Experience -- a traveling replica of Washington's Vietnam
Veterans Memorial -- which stood a few paces down the road during one
sunless week in May.

Despite the rain that fell throughout its entire stay, at least 60,000
visitors from across the metropolitan area visited the Wall. Most left
