Why haven't Democrats apologized for it?

John Wilkes Booth was actually a member of the Know Nothing Party, the predecessor to today’s Troll Caucus in the GOP.

(I say that last bit largely to be mean, but one of the central tenets of the Know Nothing Party was fierce opposition to immigration. Stephen Miller would’ve loved ‘em.)

Booth strongly believed that America belongs to “native-born whites,” making him similar in outlook to Marjorie Taylor Greene.

And that highlights the ridiculousness of the whole “Lincoln was a Republican so vote for Ted Cruz” nonsense. Until 1834, what was referred to as the Republican Party was actually the Democratic Republican Party. It was created in opposition to the policies of… wait for it… while doing a vocal warmup… Alexander Hamilton.

Simplifying greatly, the “Republicans” believed in republicanism, whereas the Federalists were more “let us wealthy white land owners handle everything.”

Lincoln was the first Republican elected president, and he won with northern votes only. Thus it’s odd hearing a fake Texan like Cruz claim he and Honest Abe have anything in common.

I promise none of this will be on the test. My point is simply that the word “Republican” means something VERY different today than it did back in 1860, and that it’s odd the GOP is trying to cash in on the name while adopting the policies of Lincoln’s assassin rather than Lincoln himself
