I remember JFK as the most hated president in my life up to that time. He was accused of having a hidden agenda to put this country under the Pope, a Liberal Communist and an Irishman. The Irish were considered lazy, drunken, brawling Papists that had flooded this country searching for a way of life that would further that lifestyle. I can remember people, upon learning he was going to Texas remarking that the Texans would kill him. When he was killed it shocked me how suddenly all that went away. I think it was because the fantasy of politics met the reality of the consequences of hate. The conclusion I came away with was how deeply triviality despises excellence and the shame it creates in the mediocre. For many years after Dallas was looked upon by many as a place of shame. His words he spoke were like bugle calls echoing across the Berlin Wall giving hope to millions under the spite of Communism and into the hearts of Americans thrilling them with the wonder of what our country meant to the world.
