"wigged" out
At Norton AFB ('69-'72) several guys tried to get away with wearing their hair longer than regulation length by the judicious application of Wildroot hair oil or even Johnson' Baby Oil and wearing an extra large cap. The problem with that was it cost them a small fortune since the caps sucked up the oil like a sponge and had to be replaced on a weekly basis. One guy got away with it for quite a while. Whenever he'd go offbase, he'd wash his hair (took damn near a whole bottle of shampoo for one washing) and it would go past his collar giving him a "normal" look. He was finally bagged at an inspection and they ordered him to get a Marine cut.
The black guys had an easier time of it. Big afros were in style so they'd wear a stocking over their hair at night to hold it down and the extra large cap on duty. When they went out on the town, they'd "pick" it out so much their hair would almost touch the door frame! Even at inspections, the wearing of the stocking matted it down enough to pass.
Another guy had a big moustache that he'd wax and fold so it would look as though it were regulation length. He'd wash it out and it would be a very nice handlebar. American ingenuity...ya gotta love it!
Never saw or heard of a wig, though.
