America-Vietnam dialogue to cover military relations
(EXCERPT) 2003-09-29 / Agence France-Presse / Vietnam and the United
States have concentrated on commercial relations in previous years but
now the former foes are expanding their ties into the military sphere,
a move which would have been unthinkable only a few years ago.
The two countries have turned the page on their deadly war, taking a
pragmatic view despite some resistance.
On Thursday, Hanoi confirmed the U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald
Rumsfeld had invited his counterpart Pham Van Tra to visit the United
States.
"If the visit takes place, it will be the first to the U.S. by a
Vietnamese defense minister (since the end of the Vietnam war)," said
foreign ministry spokesman Le Dung.
