Rear Adm. Troy M. "Mike" Shoemaker, commander of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 9, commits a wreath to the sea from the fantail of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) during a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway. The Battle of Midway, fought June 1, 1942, is widely considered the decisive battle in the Pacific theater durring World War II. Abraham Lincoln is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and support missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
