Keesler AFB hit HARD by Katrina
Found out from one of the airmen here at Eglin AFB that Keesler AFB, Mississippi, took basically a direct hit.
About 50% of the base was under water. The base commissary and exchange was totally flooded and almost destroyed. There was heavy damage to the housing areas which were under six feet of water.
Keesler AFB Hospital, one of the largest in the Air Force, is out of operation for about three weeks.
Luckily there were no fatalities or injuries, but about 6,000 airmen and their families are still in shelters. Much of the base is still without power.
However, Keesler's airfield remains operational during daylight hours, and it has a fully operational sewage system and access to drinking water.
Columbus AFB, Mississippi, and Barksdale AFB, Louisiana are back in operation.
Prayers, please, and good wishes for our airmen and their families stationed at Keesler.
